Lusardi Construction Company and HKS Architects were contracted under a design-build agreement to perform design and construction services for Easterly Government Properties – Owner of the project. The FDA Laboratory project combined the renovation of an existing building with modern architecture to blend the facility within the surrounding business park. In order to accommodate the FDA laboratory equipment, extensive structural improvements had to be made to the existing facility.

The project is a 69,000 square foot alteration of an existing building that included structural upgrades to the shell, site improvements, and a building expansion of 8,000 SF. All new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems are included within the facility. The interior improvements include administrative office space for lab operations, investigative units, District and Regional administrative functions.

The laboratory and associated support space total 34,000 square feet and is equipped with 31 fume hoods, high plume exhaust fans, compressed air system, pure water system, nitrogen oxygen systems and a certified class 10,000 clean room. All mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for the laboratory functions were designed with N+1 redundancy and emergency power backup, to guarantee mission operations.
